Social status and monetary rewards are *not* substitutes. I see this misconception a lot, often from very smart and rational people.

E.g., “Why are you defending billionaires? They are already rich. They don't need praise also.”

It goes the other way too: Scientists and teachers get a lot of praise, but they should probably also be paid more.

“Science was born when, with the progress of technology, the experimental method eventually overcame the social prejudice against manual labor and was adopted by rationally trained scholars” Edgar Zilsel, “The Sociological Roots of Science” (1942) jstor.org/stable/2769053

Almost every mistaken, harmful theory of society/politics is based in part on a true identification of a real problem. It's a mistake to dismiss the symptoms because of a wrong diagnosis/prescription. It's a bigger mistake to accept the diagnosis because of the real symptoms.

“I think America had a sort of national self-esteem crisis around the late '60s / early '70s, with Vietnam, Watergate, and the oil shocks all hitting around the same time.… I don't think we've ever fully recovered.” My interview with @Noahpinion: noahpinion.substack.com/p/interview-ja…

Society is becoming accustomed to delaying gratification less and less, which means the payoff of delaying gratification grows more and more.

Ppl like to put down billionaires & say they are exploiting the poor But if you compare the data there are more billionaires in the U.S. than in Africa & the Middle East put together & yet the standard of living for the poor in the U.S. is higher than that of ppl in Africa + ME

In a hyperconnected world, it's harder to be eccentric (as a scientist, thinker, anything) b/c there's nowhere to hide. We're all mad. Nietzsche said that madness is rare in individuals but in nations & crowds of people, it’s the rule. That was before Nietzsche himself went mad.

Deep dive into some of Rene Girard's thoughts on mimetic desire, scapegoating, and Christianity 👇 Previous TLDR: twitter.com/eriktorenberg/…

In a post-modern world, what's the answer? Liberalism. Tolerance. Due process. Reason. Free speech. twitter.com/eriktorenberg/… These are more scattered thoughts than a deep dive, would welcome any follow up analyses or your own takeaways from Girard.

Look at the products & services wealthy people use, because soon enough many of the products and services that they use to be more effective & happy will be cheap enough for the masses.

We live in a weird society, people even try to go viral off of someone’s death.

While philanthropic giving can be a job for one, you need team players to build a charitable organization. Entrepreneur @Everette counts on @Acrobat DC as a team player in these 4 ways. adobe.ly/2GHT5H6

Also the honor of receiving an honorary doctorate degree from Shaw University. Even more honored because it was not due to business success but because of my “contributions to society and welfare of humanity.” Grateful for the recognition. “Poor people don’t have time for investments, because poor people are too busy trying not to be poor.” I’ve never seen the financial plight of many in the black community when it comes to wealth accumulation so neatly wrapped in one clip. pic.twitter.com/mW2SUrBmQr

Some exciting news. @Artsy x @ArtLogicMedia has joined forces to create the biggest integration in the art world. This powerful new integration will enable galleries to seamlessly share artworks directly from Artlogic to Artsy's global marketplace. bit.ly/2IUMGwV pic.twitter.com/RQGaiZcKQz

Thrilled to announce that @Artsy has launched “Imagining the New Normal,” a new collection spotlighting artists represented by Black-owned galleries curated by @mikhailesolomon. Glad to be able to give a platform to these amazing galleries and artists bit.ly/2TwUC9P

Q4 for @Everette: You mentioned on CMO Moves that Black-owned art galleries face many challenges. What are some of the most pressing obstacles that Black owners face? What are some solutions or resources that can help solve this challenge? #AdweekChat adweek.com/creativity/new…

Very proud of this collaboration between @Artsy & @OUTFRONTMEDIAUS to bring beautiful images of "black joy" nationwide. Beyond that, I'm proud that everything we've done at @Artsy during Black History Month isn't just a moment, but a mission for us. adweek.com/brand-marketin…

The only two ways to coordinate human societies at scale are free markets and physical power. Any ideology rejecting free markets is just advocating for power. Socialism, communism, and fascism all converge to the same endpoint - rule by the biggest thug.

The more neatly you fit into society, the less free you actually are.

The overt pursuit of status signals low status, so we covertly pursue status, disguised as public virtue.
