a theme v present in my mind atm: the majority of us live incredibly self-centred lives. most of what we do is in service to ourselves, either as part of the project of bettering the self (exercise, therapy, personal development etc) or protecting the self (wealth, home, status)

I occasionally get to hang around people with real wealth, and those on their way to real wealth. I've notice there is a rising scale of how wealth is experienced. As your income gains more zeros, you ascend through this scale. pic.twitter.com/Lz4QJBo18K

Oops. Turns out most of what I call "emotional processing" is actually just depressive rumination and I'd lose nothing whatsoever if I just stopped. "Taking time for processing", then, is mostly just indulging in a self-reinforcing self-harm spiral. Facepalm of the decade.

At a show on his Solo Tour, John Mayer confessed: “I wait for most things to be over. I wait for this to be over to do the next thing and the next thing and the next thing and the next thing...” To counter this tendency, he implemented a rule. “Because I’ve realized, he said,… twitter.com/i/web/status/1… pic.twitter.com/1k9PKeFwRG

I’m convinced the secret to happiness is curiosity. You can’t stay anxious or lonely for long when you approach everything and everyone from a place of curiosity.

many people just need a long hug, or a brief ice bath, or a hot yoga class, or a night of moving and shaking, or some other Deeply Embodying experience to remind them that their experience of existing can be a whole new kind of fun and playful when they are not Stuck In The Mind.

Your weakest thoughts come when you’re tired, malnourished, or stressed. In the moment they appear in the form of truth and certainty, but they’re just linguistic manifestations of bodily deficiencies. Understanding this in the moment is 99% of winning any ‘mental game.’

Me, after getting the right medication and learning to treat my body reasonably well and learning some agency: "Life is basically alright, which is surprising." It is a horrible crime that people have been convinced that lifetime happiness is mostly stable You can radically change your baseline state I've done it at least three times and I'm not a genius, I was just lucky to stumble into the right resources

This is the best summation of the levels of friendship I've ever seen. Kudos to @thogge. Saw it about a week ago and have been thinking about it ever since. pic.twitter.com/CSbPDMFk0h

External validation is Good Actually, it just makes a huge difference whether it's being sought from a few people you respect, or a perceived audience that is actually just an internalization of your most venomous self-judgement twitter.com/relic_radiatio…

Note to Self: No matter how much money you have, how many cars you drive, or how many properties you own... If you can’t read a book or take a walk/nap on a (random) Tuesday at noon without asking for permission... You’re NOT rich. pic.twitter.com/5IwLhyhlhT

This is the real secret of life — to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.

@krishnanrohit Spending so much time indoors is psychologically damaging in subtle but important ways. The feeling of complete enclosure, having our eyes focused on short distances (screens exacerbating this), and viewing right angles/flat surfaces all the time has non-trivial effects

we spend everything we have chasing success and status and style and romance when the actual purpose of life is to have three best friends who live within walking distance

1/ I have a working theory of a meaningful life that is centered on 2 main axis: Effort and Earnestness You need high effort and high earnestness to feel challenged + purpose-driven - the optimal state of being. When these 2 are met, the experience is 'flow' or autotelic. pic.twitter.com/E8yHpxeMMy

Here’s another clip from the latest episode of The Drive where @arthurbrooks discusses how happy people tend to have a “big picture” view, seeing themselves as a small (wonderful) part, rather than the center, of the universe. Full episode here: bit.ly/3EyBuRq pic.twitter.com/X8Q7PWn7GN

What makes life good? Some of us want a happy life, while others want a meaningful one. But still others want something else - an interesting life. Now in press at PsychRev, Shige Oishi & I make the case for the psychologically rich life as a desirable overlooked alternative 1/n pic.twitter.com/lAe8S9E0Ax

Living requires some optionality. A full-time job takes away most of it — regardless of how much you like it. It's sunny outside, and you'd like to spend some time with your kids? Sorry, that job you love cannot wait.

Pattern I’ve discovered amongst entrepreneurial European families living the good life: moved to a 3rd tier city (like Valencia) and opened up a series of “modern,” first mover businesses (poke shop, yoga and meditation studio, etc). Passive income, holiday endlessly

A while back I decided that I was going to think about my life in 20 year arcs broken up into 5 year chunks. Essentially, 4 5yr quarters make up a phase/arc. So 0-20, 20-40,40-60 etc with the quarters in between for understanding how to think about life, planning, adventure etc

  • Nice way to think about it
